Improving Life and Fostering Connections

Meet the President.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

The Materials Society is one of the most supportive and organized clubs I’ve been a part of. Everyone involved is constantly looking to improve and it shines through in the support given back to the community. We’re small yet strong!

Meet the Artists.

Why did you enter the materials stream?

The reason I love to be in materials is the opportunity to pursue whatever your interests are! I like polymers because they come in so many shapes and forms, we could be talking about a plastic bag or a bouncy ball. Understanding the vast amount of different polymers is also essential towards sustainability and recycling. Because of polymers (and my eco-conscious roommates) I know how to recycle properly and why it is important. The opportunities are endless!

Why did you enter the Materials stream?

I entered the materials stream because of the tight-knit community! The materials professors and department staff are very supportive and helpful which is a major aspect for why I chose materials. Also the program covers very diverse topics ranging from computation to metallurgy to biomaterials.

Meet the Nerds.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

To get involved and give back to the MSE Department. I want to support the students in the department to achieve their fullest potential - whether that's in the classroom, in the workplace, or simply in their general wellbeing :)

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I want to help inspire incoming engineering students to choose materials! (the superior engineering faculty)

Why did you join the MSE Society?

This is my second year on the MSE Society, and I came back because I enjoy connecting students with the resources they need to be successful inside and outside the classroom.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

To get more involved in the tight-knit materials community! Last year was a lot of fun getting to know some of the fantastic people in this department and I can't wait to work with everyone again this year!

Meet the Networkers.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I joined the MSE society as it was a huge aid for me in my second year of studies and wanted to join this group to support others in the faculty!

Why did you join the MSE Society?

To get to know other Materials Engineering students and improve my social and interpersonal skills.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I'm excited to be returning for my second year as a member of the MSE Society! I joined the society because I've always enjoyed getting involved in my community and meeting new people. The society has been a great way to do both and share my passion for this program with others.

Meet the Neat Freaks.

Why did you enter the Materials stream?

I really enjoyed Materials 1M03 in first year and liked the idea of a smaller program which would also allow me to pursue a career in manufacturing.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

Joining the MSE Society was a no-brainer after aeons of isolation in online classes - the invigoration of working and socializing with my cohort was absolutely a boon to my academic and mental health!

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I joined the society because I love our department! Everyone is so supportive and I really wanted to be more involved in the community.

Meet the Queens of Coordination.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I believe in students supporting students. Other students helped me get where I am, and I want to do the same.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

To share my materials passion with other materials and first year students! Going into the materials field, I want to surround myself with people sharing the same goals and immerse myself in the community!

Meet Mr. World Wide.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I got a lot of support from the MSE Society in my third year and I enjoyed participating in events hosted by it. Inspired by those lovely MSE Society members, I wanted to follow in their steps, give off positive vibes and support other international students.

Meet the Recruiters.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

Hey, I'm Ethan Meng! I joined the MSE Society to broaden my horizons and express my interest in material sciences. I realized that I had a passion to organize and volunteer for material science events. As such, I wanted to create opportunities for students to learn about the possibilities of material sciences, and potential careers related to the field.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I love having the opportunity to connect and learn from other Materials students in all different years. It is also a very inspiring team to work on!

Meet the Bank Tellers.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

It's fun. Cool people.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

Drawn by the society's dedication to creating memories and forming connections, I saw an unparalleled opportunity to contribute, learn, and drive change alongside like-minded individuals.

Meet the Extroverts.

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I first joined back in 2020 as a chance to make connections, get involved in the community, and to make the school experience better for MSE students. I am excited to do just that again this year!

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I joined the MSE Society back in 2021 because I wanted to be more involved in the matls community, meet new people, and have opportunities to network! I was on the academic team for 2 years, but wanted to try something different this year round. Since I like organizing events, social team was my next stop :)

Why did you join the MSE Society?

I joined the MSE Society to better connect and collaborate with all materials folks while also helping to bring the community closer together!

Meet the Advocates.

Why did you enter the Materials stream?

I entered materials due to the vast range of opportunities for me to do what I'm passionate about !! All the way from pursuing a career in the resource and manufacturing sectors, where one can be involved in designing and implementing processes within factories and plants and also exploring the field of material research and development, contributing to the creation of different nanomaterials for applications in biomedical, automotive and aerospace industries. The best part is that there's so many paths to choose from that may appeal to your interest !!

Why did you enter the Materials stream?

I love that materials is a small program. The instructors care about every student's success and work very hard to make the program as welcoming and accessible as possible. There are also oppurtunities in a wide variety of industries. There is truly something for everyone in materials!
